Heroclix

What is this I hear you ask?  Well not perhaps the old hands, but a newcomer might not know what this is all about.  It is a skirmish type game based on all the comic book heroes and villains.  Their powers and abilities are listed on the base and as they take damage you turn the base until they are knocked out, thus Heroclix.

If you want to try out the game without buying first I am sure there will be more than one member willing to lend you a team.

If your interested in taking part in any heroclix events that we are running, please e-mail Antony Chilton with "Heroclix" as the subject and you will be registered on the mailing list.

Mechwarrior

Like the Heroclix game above but, as you might deduct from its title, the action here is from teams of robotic or mechanical warriors. A future war concept if you like.

If your interested in taking part in any mechwarrior events that we are running, please e-mail Antony Chilton with "Mechwarrior" as the subject and you will be registered on the mailing list.

Pirates of the Spanish Main

They are continually expanding the range of ships for this game which is quite an original concept based on the old bubble gum card packs collections. The ships come ready to assemble on high quality cards, printed in high gloss colours, with a set of rules and two dice.

As the name suggests, you will find both pirates and ships of several nationalities each with their own abilities. Play is simple and a around £2.50 for a pack of two ships is a cost effective way to build a pirate fleet.

WW2 Land Warfare

There almost as many scales for the Second World War as there are sets of rules. The three main ones played at the club have to be: 1/300th, 15mm and 20mm or 1/72nd.

The smaller 1/300th is largely used for land battles where the players want to deploy a lot of armour.  The small scale means there is room for a fairly large scale tank battle on a six foot by four foot tabletop.

With the current flavour of the month rules, Flames of War, has come mass conversion of players down from 20mm to 15mm scale.  The smaller scale does give room to field a largish armed force on table with plenty of infantry support.  They will even incorporate a limited aircraft role in their games.

More details: http://www.flamesofwar.com/

The 20mm scale still remains popular for wargamers at our club or many others because most of us at one time or another owned some Airfix 1/72 models or soldiers that fit this scale.  Alongside the traditional plastic figures there are also large numbers of manufacturers that now supply lead vehicles and figures along with a wide range of resign kits.

Popular rules for this scale include: Crossfire and Rapid Fire. Both are designed to play with limited or no armoured vehicles although, Rapid Fire, will work quite well, so long as you do not fill the table with Tiger II tanks.

WW2 Naval

Without doubt the most popular scale for this period is 1:3000.  With radar and the aircraft carrier giving even greater distance to the powerful main armaments of 1930+ battleships, you need a lot of room to manoeuvre a fleet and this is the scale for that. There are a very wide range of naval craft available for all the main nations of the war.  You can quite easily get a fleet for any WW2 action you choose.

Models are available from:  http://www.navwar.co.uk/

There are many rules for these games and it is often just personal choice. You could certainly try half a dozen sets out at our club. Or try a set from:   http://www.freewargamesrules.co.uk/
